Everyone has a hard time focusing from time to time. Now, many people are turning to CBD for focus rather than relying on pharmaceuticals and other concentration methods. There are even specially curated strains dedicated to helping with mental acuity.
We know that Cannabidiol (CBD) has a long list of therapeutic benefits that have put it at the forefront of clinical studies. But does it work?
To find out how CBD can help to improve concentration and focus, keep reading.
Does CBD Help With Focus and Concentration?
As far as science goes, we know that Cannabidiol works with our body’s Endocannabinoid System. This biological system is responsible for maintaining the balance of all the body’s systems from immune function to memory. When there’s an imbalance or too much stimuli, certain systems become negatively affected.
Our biological systems can be affected either directly or indirectly by excess stimuli or an imbalance. For example, when we lack focus and can’t seem to concentrate, the culprit is usually due to poor habits, excess stress, or specific health conditions. CBD has become well known for remedying such issues, which, in turn, improves concentration and focus.
Let’s take a closer look at what can diminish your ability to focus:
The stress of everyday life has become the human condition. When we’re facing a stressful situation, our body’s natural response is to release the hormone cortisol. Over time, high levels of cortisol in the body contribute to the disruption of all your body’s processes, causing several health problems. Among these disrupted processes are your memory and concentration.
The amount of sleep you get and the quality will directly affect your ability to focus and concentrate. Our brains run on high throughout each day, and they need time to shut off and rest. Without regular and quality rest, our cognitive functions begin to diminish, and cortisol levels increase.
ADD and ADHD are very common disorders that disrupt focus and concentration in both children and adults. Most people turn to prescription medications to control these disorders. However, they tend to have unwanted side effects, including moodiness, nausea, increased blood pressure, and even insomnia.
CBD studies show that Cannabidiol has therapeutic properties that promote relaxation and is also able to lower the cortisol levels in the brain, thereby reducing stress and regulating sleep patterns. It has also been shown to reduce the impulsive behavior and hyperactivity seen in people with ADD and ADHD by regulating cognitive function, which also leads to normalized social behavior.
CBD and the Brain
CBD is also associated with dopamine, the chemical neurotransmitter responsible for memory, concentration, mental awareness, motivation, and satisfaction. It’s often referred to as the “motivation molecule,” as it encourages the drive and mental focus needed for productivity. It also dictates our attention span and ability to follow through with a task, ultimately leading us to feelings of pleasure or satisfaction once a project is complete.
When our dopamine levels are low, it causes an imbalance. This imbalance often causes the following:
- Lack of focus, concentration, and motivation
- Sugar cravings
Studies show that CBD acts as an “allosteric receptor modulator,” meaning that it can mitigate how a receptor transmits a signal by changing its shape. Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, meaning that it can block specific brain signals as well as decrease nervous system activity.
GABA reduces the activity of the neurons that it binds with to control neuron responses such as fear and anxiety. However, it also has an inhibiting effect on dopamine, given an imbalanced internal environment. CBD being the allosteric receptor modulator that it is, blocks GABA activity, thereby, increasing dopamine levels as well as preventing “burn out.”
What We Think About CBD For Focus
Using CBD for focus may be the solution if you’re experiencing a lack of motivation. Remember to speak with your doctor before adding CBD to your daily regimen, especially if you’re taking medication.
