Making CBD Flower Lotion – The DIYer Extraordinaire

When you make your own hemp lotion at home, you can include or avoid any ingredients that you like. While it might take quite a bit of experimentation to l\’\’and on a lotion formula that you love, the topical you end up producing will be all yours.

CBD lotion packages the immense benefits of this non-intoxicating cannabinoid \’\’and delivers them topically, but it’s hard to find a CBD lotion that fits your exact specifications. With so many CBD creams, salves, \’\’and balms that feature isolate CBD or other inferior types of hemp extract, it’s natural to want to cut through all the clutter by making your own CBD lotion using CBD-rich hemp flower.

Making CBD Flower Lotion – Distinguishing Between the Topicals

There are quite a few different types of CBD topicals with only a few distinguishing characteristics. Making your own lotion provides an opportunity to use a particular high CBD flower that has potency you want. It also allows you to add additional antioxidants like vitamin E oil.  Let’s look at four major types of CBD topicals

CBD Lotion

CBD lotion” is generally a water-based topical with a runny texture. Since lotions contain up to 50% water, it is difficult to keep them stable.  This problem can be the cause of a more costly product \’\’and they may contain more additives.

CBD Cream

CBD cream is slightly thicker than lotion, but it is still water-based. The CBD cream is usually packed into tubs or little jars.

CBD Balm

CBD balms are different because they have oil bases. This results in a different consistency of being thicker \’\’and firmer. The balm topicals utilize a significant amount of beeswax.  CBD balms create an effective skin barrier due to their high wax content. This would be an option for using as a sunscreen or preventive to bug bites in the summer.

CBD salve

While CBD salve is similar to CBD balm, but it is softer in consistency since the essential oil content exceeds the beeswax used.

Making CBD Flower Lotion – Calculating the Dosage

Say you decide to make an indica CBD lotion using CB Dawg at 16.9% CBD per gram, which means that every gram includes 169 milligrams of CBD. If you decide to include 10 grams of CBD flower in your lotion recipe, that means it would contain 1,690 milligrams (1.69g) of total CBD. If you follow the recipe below, your finished lotion will have a total volume of about 2 cups \’\’and each gram of lotion will contain approximately 12 mg of CBD.

  • 3-7 grams of ground decarboxylated CBD flower (Directions for decarboxylation)
  • ½ cup distilled water
  • ½ cup beeswax pastilles or grated beeswax
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup aloe vera gel
  • ¼ cup jojoba oil
  • 20 drops of your choice of essential oils

Put the beeswax, coconut oil \’\’and decarboxylated CBD flower in the top of the double boiler on low heat. Continue to stir repeatedly these two ingredients during 30 to 60 minutes of simmering.  In a separate pot heat the ½ cup of water to the same temperature as the beeswax/coconut oil mixture with the use of a probe thermometer.

Place the mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth over a mixing bowl. Pour the beeswax/coconut oil \’\’and decarboxylated hemp flower through the cheesecloth lined mesh strainer. Slowly pour the water into the mixture stirring constantly. Continue stirring until you have the consistency you want.

Lastly, pour the aloe vera gel, jojoba oil \’\’and the essential oil of your choice into the mixture. Pour the finished lotion into a glass jar container. It will be good for about three months.
