The CBD Skin Patch and Other Dosing Options

The CBD skin patch is a novel but effective way to dose when other methods are ineffective, or you just want to try something else. More and more ways to dose are becoming available and that is a good thing for two reasons. Everyone has different preferences, and everyone has different conditions to treat which respond to some methods of dosing but not to others.

The CBD Skin Patch – Defining the Skin Patch

Skin patches, CBD-infused transdermal patches, are small adhesive patches that distribute CBD through the skin and on to release it into the bloodstream. Not like topical lotions and creams, transdermal patches cross the dermal barrier to go into the bloodstream then triggered by body heat.

But here is an interesting tidbit. The skin patches allow small amounts of the CBD to be released over a prolonged period of time.  The period of time varies but it usually ranges between three to six hours.

CBD has a history of use for pain reduction and now because of legalization of hemp much more formal research is happening including how effective CBD hemp is with pain relief.

The CBD Skin Patch — How They Dose

There are many ways to dose with CBD, but everybody does not like certain ways. Some do not smoke or vape so have no interest in that way. Others do not like the flavor of the tincture so prefer gummies. Then there are those who only want skin applications and if you are that person then the CBD-infused skin patch may be just for you.

The other advantage to the CBD skin patch is if you are dosing for pain, you can apply it directly to the area of the pain. The other advantage to the CBD-infused skin patch rather than other topicals, is that their effect tapers off, so you have to apply it multiple times during the day. Patches stay on the skin, delivering CBD continually over a period 6 to 8 hours of time.   This provides a more steady stream of relief from symptoms.

When you are using a CBD-infused skin patch, put it on a place on your skin that has the most direct contact with the largest possible area of skin.  Also apply it to a soft area of skin rather than near bony or irregular areas of skin. Put it as close to the painful area as possible.  Following are some best places to put the skin patch where it will be the most effective:

  • inside of the wrists;
  • inside of the ankle;
  • back of the neck;
  • shoulder;
  • lower back;
  • lower thigh,
  • behind the knee;
  • inside of the bicep.

The CBD Skin Patch – How CBD Hemp Works to Relieve Pain

Hemp cannabinoids work against pain in these two ways:

  • They act on the endocannabinoid system within the body to block the receptors for various types of pain.
  • They have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body, which may help reduce pain caused by inflammation.

The transdermal delivery system make CBD patches best for some forms of inflammation, nerve pain, and localized pain because it has the following benefits:

  • Sustained delivery of CBD;
  • Minimal adverse effects;
  • Localized anti-inflammatory activity;
  • Localized pain relief.

If you have arthritis pain in your knee, inflammation and nerve pain in the back, or pain from a condition in the skin, you can put the patch right on the exact spot. A recent study showed that the CBD-infused skin patch relieves pain so much that those addicted to opioids found they were able to decrease their opioid intake after 8 weeks.
