Why Hemp Fiber Matters to Me – Hemp is All Good

In the United States, we’ve recently started exploring the potential of the hemp plant once again because of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill released a huge wave of research that exploded far beyond the restrictions of research only within the state university research labs.  CBD was only the introduction to the massive utility of the hemp plant. Hemp had a high content of CBD and its benefits were quickly recognizable. For some time, CBD oil tincture was a stand-alone product and it was a big hit and continues to be most popular.

But the landscape has changed in a grand way today as the research has continued to go deeper in an exploration of the hemp plant. Now one of the best discoveries researchers and scientists have developed is the multitude of uses for hemp fiber. Hemp advocates believe it to be a more sustainable and faster-growing source of paper than timber and advocates and investors are impressed by its versatility in multiple industries including a big one — as a building material.

Why Hemp Fiber Matters to Me – Where Hemp Fiber Comes From

Hemp fiber comes from the cannabis hemp plant. Male and female cannabis plants both produce fiber, however, the male plant produces the most and the fibers most desirable.  The fibers are in the stalks underneath a thick skin.  Underneath the fiber in the hemp stalk is a woody area called a shive and inside that is a hollow space where water and nutrients pass through.

To extract the fibers, the farmer must isolate them by retting which results in a raw fiber that is ready to be cleaned and carded in the form of a straight bunch of loose fibers.  The hemp fiber is now in a state called “raw stock” and the next process is different depending on the product you want to manufacture.

  • Rope
  • Clothing
  • Shipping supplies
  • Bags
  • Horse bedding
  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Concrete
  • Insulation
  • Particleboard

Hemp was most likely the first fiber used by prehistoric people. At various points in history, hemp was commonly used for sailcloth and the maritime rope because it has proven very resistant to the deteriorating effects of saltwater.

Why Hemp Fiber Matters to Me – Practicability of Hemp Clothing

When you are clothed in hemp, you are wearing something durable and practical as well. Hemp clothing also creates a temperature and energetic balance.  Guess what? This is particularly important in the case of someone having and stubborn wound making it difficult to wear clothes; now you have options because you can wear a hemp shirt, dress, or pants. You may be asking, “Why does hemp fiber matters to me? The reason is that it is durable and also good for the environment. Some think that it helps your daily energy.

Do you want to know another reason why hemp fiber matters to me?  Well, ready or not, here I come with the reason! When you wear hemp clothing it has a natural resistance to ultraviolet radiation. Hemp is also noted for the porosity of the fibers so it can more easily absorb moisture and breathe better. Hemp is the new cotton to wear in the heat of summer.

Why Hemp Fiber Matters to Me – What Hemp Replaces

Hemp fiber is replacing a variety of less-sustainable substances such as:

  • Cotton textiles
  • Fiberglass insulation
  • Petrochemical plastic
  • Timber cellulose
  • Steel

The majority of the world’s paper comes from trees, leading to deforestation. But the hemp plant grows to maturity in only a few months and can provide paper just as useful, and it’s considerably more sustainable to produce.  Cellulose in hemp fiber is useful to make eco-friendly bioplastics that are highly biodegradable and have fewer harmful chemicals.  Hemp fiber can be constructed into a hard, durable substance stronger than steel to the point of being suitable to make most of a car.

“Matters to Me” Last

In the wake of the 2014 Farm Bill, the production of hemp fiber in the United States has gradually regained its former place within the agricultural economy. Cultivation of CBD-rich hemp has skyrocketed since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, inspiring a massive change in how we view this controversial crop. As the cultivation of hemp for CBD and other cannabinoids becomes more mainstream, it’s likely that this impressive plant will also take a more prominent place within the industrial economy.
